Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion '25 drew us even deeper into the rich history of recorded music in the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee and Virginia. Nearly a century has passed since Ralph Peer's historic Bristol Sessions, and the performance space inside of the The Birthplace of Country Music Museum (BCMM) – the cultural center dedicated to preserving and carrying the tradition forward – provided the most fitting studio location for us to add our own recordings to the already vast catalog.
North Carolina country, bluegrass, and Americana legend Jim Lauderdale joined us in the BCMM to share two new original songs, along with a third song co-written with the iconic Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter.
The BCMM provided the perfect platform to dig into the history of the space, including Lauderdale's thoughts on the Bristol Sessions, often called the “Big Bang of Country Music,” and a deeper dive into the recordings by The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers, whose influence continues to shape recorded music to this day.
We also spoke about Lauderdale’s Tai Chi practice and the ways it informs both physical well-being and the tone of his interpersonal relationships. For more about Lauderdale check out ND's profile about his 2019 album From Another World.
