ALBUM REVIEW: Stillness Is the Sweet Spot on The Paper Kites’ ‘If You Go There, I Hope You Find It’

The Paper Kites have been on the move for most of their 15 years as a band, whether on the road or up the charts with well-crafted, sweetly rendered indie folk songs that have found niches in TV show soundtracks and social media.

But for their seventh studio album, If You Go There, I Hope You Find It, they’re exploring what it means to be still.

The songs are steeped in the wide open spaces of the Yarra Valley, a scenic region near the band’s hometown of Melbourne, Australia. For their latest, The Paper Kites, now back to five members after expanding to eight for their 2023 gem At the Roadhouse (review), assembled at a friend’s farm there to take stock, breathe the air, and write. What emerged is a profoundly beautiful and deeply human set of songs that embrace an appreciation of the here and now, imperfect though it may be.
