ALBUM REVIEW: Jeremy Ivey’s Home-Recorded 'Its Shape Will Reveal Itself' is Unvarnished and Honest

Jeremy Ivey’s “Walk With Me” rides slow on ambling cowboy chords, all at once cinematic and intimate. Its sound is more western than most of Ivey’s new Its Shape Will Reveal Itself. Tape wobble distorts Ivey’s voice as he sings of modern confusion. It fits the moment–a welcome accident on an album recorded on restored analog gear.

“If you can’t walk, I’ll carry you with me / if you can’t speak, I’ll read your thoughts,” Ivey sings. “If you can’t look, I’ll be your vision / build a bridge across.”

Ivey didn’t initially intend to release Its Shape Will Reveal Itself. These are home recordings, after all, which Ivey put to tape on a refurbished ‘80s-era Tascam. In the DIY spirit, Ivey decided to put them out anyway. Thing is, Ivey’s social commentaries and poppy musings already live in a late-20th century cosmic psychedelia vein. To that end, Its Shape Will Reveal Itself sounds just right home-recorded through 40-year-old technology.
