With his new LP, The Dreamin’ Kind, Langhorne Slim largely backburners the folkish and lo-fi sounds of earlier albums, including 2021’s Strawberry Mansion. Aided by producer Sam Kiszka, he embraces rock guitars, synths, and elaborate arrangements. While Slim has never sounded so polished, panoramic, or mainstream, his authenticity is never in question.
Opener “Rock n Roll” is built around power chords and hard-hitting drums. “Some days you’re one with the breeze / And other days you get carried away,” Slim bellows, sharing his brand of equanimity. “Dream Come True” blends a bluesy acoustic guitar, accordion lines, and a twangy banjo. The song speaks to not being dumbed-down by the system, to staying committed to your dreams, no matter how unconventional or seemingly impractical they may be.
