Last Saturday, more than 2,000 cities around the US held "No Kings" protests, which drew between four and six million people, according to The Independent.
Canadian-American banjoist and singer-songwriter Allison Russell and New York City-based hip-hop and bluegrass collective Gangstagrass teamed up for a song inspired by the protests, titled "No Kings (In The USA)," which was released before the events. The track also features artists Demeanor, R-SON The Voice Of Reason, Dolio The Sleuth, and Ole! No Kings.
The Resistance Revival Chorus and Tony award-winning composer Shaina Taub also sang a version in the streets of New York City. Read more about the vocal collective in the Winter 2020 "All Together Now" issue of No Depression.
Yesterday on Juneteenth, Kyshona released a beautiful live version of “More In Common,” the closing track from her 2020 album, Listen (ND review). Do just that and read more from Nashville singer-songwriter and arts therapist in her Screen Door essay for the Spring 2023 issue of No Depression.
And today, right in the middle of Pride Month, Mya Byrne released a new single titled "Transsexual Blues." As described in a press release, "The song came out of a deep late-night conversation [Byrne and partner Swan Real] had with pioneering queer country artist Patrick Haggerty of Lavender Country, about the trials of being a tokenized, marginalized trans artist in Americana."
Jason Isbell announced the openers for this tenth annual residency at Nashville's storied Ryman Auditorium. Instead of lining up all his favorite contemporary bands, however, Isbell decided to partner with public schools and music programs in Nashville and throughout the Southeast — as his label, Southeastern Records, writes — "to highlight the educators and students working to shape the next generation of live music." All dates and openers are listed below and tickets go on sale today at 10am CDT.

In April, we heard the news that Amadou Bagayoko, singer and guitarist in the Grammy-nominated, husband-and-wife Malian duo Amadou & Mariam, had passed away at the age of 70. The band had been working on another album over the last seven years, though, and Mariam Doumbia still plans on releasing it this fall. The title track of the new record, L’amour à la folie, is out now.
Bluegrassers Special Consensus have a new album out today titled Been All Around This World. The band is celebrating 50 years in 2025, which according to their label Compass Records, makes Special Consensus the longest continuously touring bleugrass group. Check out this video featuring six of the band's previous vocalists (Robbie Fulks, Ashby Frank, Chris Jones, Rick Faris, Josh Williams and Dallas Wayne) covering John Hartford's “Wish We Had Our Time Again.”
