Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol is lined with bronze and marble likenesses of founding fathers, renowned orators, war heroes, and do-gooders, two from each state. But soon the first musician will join its ranks, and it’s a good one: Johnny Cash. Arkansas has designated the famed singer as one of its representative figures, along with civil rights activist Daisy Bates. (Cash and Bates were selected in 2019 to replace the state’s previous statues, placed 100 years ago, which honored a secessionist and advocate for white supremacy.) The bronze likeness of Cash, who grew up in Dyess, Arkansas, will be unveiled in the hall on Sept. 24.
