ALBUM REVIEW: The SteelDrivers’ 'Outrun' Serves Up Murder and Mayhem

Over the past twenty years together as a band, the SteelDrivers have undergone a few personnel changes, while retaining their unique sound and identity in the bluegrass world. Having landed on a strong combination of players, they create a sound that respects the tradition while infusing their music with the influences of blues, country, and soul.

The band recorded their newest album Outrun at the iconic Sun Records in Memphis, famous for discovering Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis. The SteelDrivers certainly don’t need discovery, but their move to the label proves an ideal partnership.

At the heart of the SteelDrivers’ sound is their driving instrumental style and impeccable harmonies. Fiddler and co-founder Tammy Rogers had a hand in writing most of the songs on the album, partnering with Leslie Satcher for the title song. (She also paired with veteran songwriters Thomm Jutz, Verlon Thomspon, and Gary Baker.)
