A diary of hard times, Path of Totality chronicles the lives of people nickel and dimed in America today, bucking the odds to get by. On their third album as The Montvales, the Knoxville-bred, Cincinnati-based Molly Rochelson and Sally Buice explore the desperation and determination that inspire quiet resistance in a society unresponsive to the needs of everyday folks, giving these unvarnished tales a timely urgency.
Produced by Mike Eli LoPinto, who also did the honors on the previous Montvales effort, Born Strangers, the album spotlights the piquant voices of Rochelson (a tad sweeter) and Buice (a little twangier), who could pass for sisters when they join together. Their tangy harmonies add an arresting edge to these perceptive tunes, which feature appealing down home embellishments like mandolin, steel, and banjo.
