ALBUM REVIEW: Sophie Gault Lets Her Freak Flag Fly On ‘Unhinged’

“I’m nobody’s pocket change,” sings Sophie Gault on “Pocket Change,” a kiss-off befitting the rough-around-the-edges sound Gault has been perfecting for years, this time on her latest record, Unhinged. Gault’s voice is a pretty snarl, its soft and abrasive sides in beguiling harmony, ideal for telling an ex to take a hike, singing to the last call crowd, or delivering a bit of tough love. When she tells you what she is or what she isn’t, you had better believe her. Fiery guitar licks beckon you into these songs like a buzzing neon sign, and Gault’s warmly weathered vocals keep you sticking around until she sends you on your way, loaded up on whiskey, with a swift kick in the ass.
