ALBUM REVIEW: Retro Folk Rock Purrs From Fantastic Cat

Fantastic Cat is a sort-of New York City super-group composed of four would be singer-songwriter stars: Anthony D’Amato, Brian Dunn, Don DiLego and Mike Montali (of Hollis Brown). They regularly wear cat masks in photos and readily acknowledge their commercial limitations; the joke is in part that their retro-70s folk rock is not the stuff of superstardom these days and that (partially as a result) none of them is exactly a chart-topper along the lines of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young or the Highwaymen (Waylon Jenning, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson). As an effort to sell-out, or even upsell, the band was always more of a whimper than a purr.
