On their twelfth album, the North Mississippi Allstars celebrate the sounds that brought them together on their 2000 debut, Shake Hands with Shorty. Still Shakin’, delivering a rousing blend of funky Memphis soul, Mississippi Hill Country blues, swampy rock and roll, and glittering jazz blues fusion.
Jojo Hermann’s ethereal B3 chords drench “Stay All Night” in a swampy funk groove. On the instrumental bridge, Robert Kimbrough’s snaky lead guitar slithers into a major key as the song shifts from its haunting minor chord opening, as the song evokes the movement from the fall of night to the break of day. This atmospheric extended jam has its sonic cousin in the Allman Brothers “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” Sharisse and Shontelle Norman’s vocals play call-and-response with Luther Dickinson’s vocals over the percussive stutter of “My Mind is Ramblin’,” which unfurls slowly as it moves into a shimmering instrumental blues jazz fusion.
