ALBUM REVIEW: Haley Heynderickx and Max García Conover Channel Woodie Guthrie on ‘What of Our Nature’

Building on their 2018 EP, Among Horses III, Haley Heynderickx and Max García Conover release their full-length debut, channeling, as their bio states, “the spirit of Woodie Guthrie.” The project does indeed exude a decidedly vintage feel, though themes such as the dark side of capitalism, the role of greed in our history, and the importance of individual rights are every bit as pertinent in 2025 as they were during Guthrie’s time.

Most of the lyrics on What of Our Nature tilt in an activistic direction. “Song for Alicia” addresses the way people in power try to suppress the protests of those who do not benefit from the established order (“Alicia was put into prison / No trial or charge or conviction”). “Mr. Marketer” speaks to the role of intergenerational conditioning, how we’re essentially told what we’re “destined to be.”
