Western swing legends Asleep at The Wheel have been a band for 55 years, and a Texas band for 50 of those. Impossible to confuse with the hottest new thing, Asleep at The Wheel’s secret has always been in being the most fun on the block. And to celebrate half a century of mutual admiration with the Lone Star State, the band’s latest release — their 32nd album — Riding High in Texas is a rollicking, foot-stomping tribute to hard work, endurance, and a whole lotta swinging good times.
“Partner, the rest of the world's not worth / A pound of good old Texas dirt / I got to go, I got Texas in my soul,” Asleep at The Wheel frontman Ray Benson declares his feelings on the band’s version of “Texas in my Soul” (written by Ernest Tubb and Zeb Turner). Though that statement’s veracity is readily evident, the album is a 10-track groovy, joyful love letter to Texas.
