This week the column stays in California for Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, held in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park (October 2-4, 2026).

Since its creation in 2001, by local venture capitalist, and banjo player, Warren Hellman, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (HSB) has remained free and open to everyone. Despite numerous offers from various would-be corporate sponsors, Hellman and, since his passing in 2011, his heirs and foundation, have eschewed such overtures. Hellman wanted to keep the emphasis on the music, the musicians, and community.

In addition to three days of music featuring 67 artists, many not only having their own sets but also collaborative ones, on six stages across Hellman Hollow, Lindley and Marx Meadows in the park, to celebrate its 25th anniversary the fest also published a coffee-table photo book, and companion exhibition, appropriately titled Hardly Strictly Bluegrass at 25 - The Big Twang!

Once again the column was fortunate to have HSB veteran Peter Dervin there who now shares his photos and experiences.
