THE READING ROOM: Revisiting Dave Mason’s ‘Only You Know and I Know’

When Dave Mason died on April 19, 2026, the world lost a musician’s musician whose passion consisted of searching for just the right notes in the music he played. Mason generously contributed his songwriting and instrumental prowess to whatever group of musicians he joined, never standing out front, but always hitting the right lick or delivering the perfect lyric to the group’s performance. His death hit me hard because I kept his solo albums Alone Together, Headkeeper, and Dave Mason spinning constantly when I was playing in bands, listening carefully as I tried to pick out lead notes and chords. The piano intro to “A Heartache, a Shadow, a Lifetime” (from Headkeeper) still moves me, and after his death I kept it on repeat for a few days.

What I loved about Mason was his ability to produce crisp and clean solos, to add the just-right riff to a measure on a song, and to produce consistently lyrically-layered songs. His 2024 autobiography (with writer Chris Epting), Only You Know and I Know (DTM Entertainment, September 10, 2024), a somber and candid look at his life in music, presents that same laser-focus on who he is and is a welcome touchstone to revisit after his passing.
