Even in a leap year, the short month of February was long in roots music releases. Spotlight artist Madi Diaz eases listeners into this month's playlist, before a strong cadre of bluegrass representation from musicians like double bass leader Missy Raines, banjo icon Béla Fleck (interpolating composer George Gershwin, at that!), Baltimore's Charm City Junction, and more.
February saw a strong collection of covers, including an unexpected version of Death Cab For Cutie's "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" by Luke Sital-Singh and Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" by Leon Bridges. The American Patchwork Quartet, which you can read more about here, also reinterpreted 14 Western folk, blues, and old-time standards.
