We are absolutely thrilled to kick off a new No Depression Session series in partnership with NYC honky-tonk Lucinda’s and Hiatus Tequila. When Lucinda Williams teamed up with industry lifers Laura McCarthy and Kelley Swindall to create a Southern country bar in NYC’s East Village with a killer jukebox, we knew we needed to work together one way or another.
Margaret Glaspy was a natural fit to start the series, having just released The Golden Heart Protector, a seven song project featuring covers of seven of her favorite songs, including “Fruits of My Labor,” written by the bar’s namesake, Lucinda Williams.
Glaspy started this two-song session with the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic, “Have You Ever Seen The Rain,” presented in the most honest and straightforward arrangement possible, a voice and an acoustic guitar. This is the same arrangement you’ll hear on her studio version of the song, unflinching and badass.
Second was Glaspy’s cover of “Fruits of My Labor” by Lucinda Williams. There was an added level of pressure to really nail this song, to do right by Lucinda, and Margaret delivered. The studio version includes jaw-dropping electric guitar work from virtuoso musician Julian Lage, and some keys popping in to say “hi,” here and there. We highly recommend giving The Golden Heart Protector a spin.
Huge thanks to Kris and Hiatus Tequila for making this series possible and keeping our spirits high, to Kelley and Lucinda’s for setting the stage, and to all of the artists who participate in these sessions. Please stay tuned for more in the pipeline, we'll keep 'em coming.
