Multi-hyphenate artist John Gallagher Jr. shared three songs with us at Chelsea Studios NYC to celebrate the arrival of his brand new EP Almost OK, out today!
Opening with the EP’s first track, “Tough Spit,” Gallagher described the song as an attempt to capture the manic feeling of endlessly scrolling through headlines and pop culture references while trying, and failing, to stay focused online.
Gallagher has spent the last twenty years balancing his work as a songwriter and musician with his Tony Award-winning career on Broadway (Spring Awakening, American Idiot), alongside television and film roles including on The Newsroom, Westworld, and 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Naturally, the conversation turned toward The Avett Brothers’ Broadway musical Swept Away, which featured Gallagher as one of its four principal cast members, before being cut short at the end of 2024. Gallagher spoke candidly about the heartbreak surrounding the abrupt end, although the unexpected downtime led him back to songwriting and the creation of Almost OK.
Huge thanks to Anthony at Large Mouth Pizza for fueling the session, please keep the vodka slices coming!
