EDITOR’S NOTE: No Depression’s new “Top 5” series features a quick playlist in which roots musicians share what they’re listening to at the moment. It gives artists the chance to highlight their contemporaries, as well as classic songs getting them through the days. This installment comes from Portland-based guitarist and songwriter, Jeffrey Silverstein, whose new album, Doggone arrived October 23 via Full Time Hobby.
Clocking in at just 28 minutes, Jeffrey Silverstein's new album, Doggone, still comprises an entire journey. At times, the guitarist veers purely instrumental, blending a mix of pedal steel wooziness and cosmic synths that could as easily soundtrack Cormac McCarthy's dystopian novel The Road or Jack Kerouac's Beat classic On The Road. Other times, he adds vocals, whether his own baritone ruminations, like on opening track "Coming Back Around," or with guest collaborator Devendra Banhart on lead single "Out of Tune."
Despite his malleability as an artist, Silverstein's songs are steeped in American roots. And if anyone doubts this, check out the giant cowboy boots sculpture that graces the cover of Doggone like a statement of purpose. Unsurprisingly then, Silverstein's picks for five songs he's currently listening to are likewise sonically diverse. Learn more about these tracks from Silversteain's friends, collaborators, and idols below, and be sure to check out Doggone, out now via Full Time Hobby.
King Tuff - “Life Begins at 40”
I’ve been stoked to spend time with new music from King Tuff this year. Moo is full of everything I love about Kyle’s music. It’s smart, playful, and catchy as hell. Originally a vinyl-only release, he also recently put Cozy & Twisted Vol. 1 “Grandma’s Favorites” up on streaming services. Recorded over the span of a few days in the spring of 2023 with his close friend Chris Weisman, it’s a beautiful collection of stripped down tunes featuring pump organ and acoustic guitar.
