FAQs / Support
Hello, and thanks for reading and supporting No Depression! This page is our customer service FAQ Version 1.0. We anticipate this page changing as No Depression grows and as we learn how to best serve our readers and members on this new platform.
Memberships & Your Account
How do I become a member?
No Depression is a nonprofit, independent publisher focused on roots music and culture. Our work is written, reported, and owned by humans who deeply care about roots artists and the industry at large. Our intended audience is real people, not AI scrapers, bots, or a search algorithm. The best way to support and experience No Depression is by becoming a paid member.
I was a journal subscriber and looking to login to my new membership account. How?
If you had an active journal subscription and paid for future issues that you will not receive, we've automatically created a Roots Revivalist member account for you and you will enjoy a free term of either 6 months (annual pay) or 3 months (quarterly or digital-only). Simply "Sign in" using the same email that was connected to your journal subscription account and you'll be all set as a member.
How do Memberships work?
Memberships start at just $8/month or save by paying annually – starting at $36/year. Browse our member tiers and benefits and select the one best for you.
Member management tools are fully in your hands (more on this in the questions below). This means that you are responsible for managing your membership, and there are no pro rata refunds for access to No Depression. After you cancel, your access will be automatically turned off once the period you paid for expires. We hope you stick with us and enjoy your member benefits – all the while continuing to provide vital support to No Depression.
How do I sign in to the website?
Once you've created your account, click "Sign In" in the top right corner. You will be asked to enter the email you used to subscribe. When you click "Continue," the site will send a magic login link to the email you entered.
If you are having trouble logging in, please make sure that you are not already logged in. Once you login for the first time, you will likely stay logged in for weeks or months before having to log in again on the same browser.
Can I create a username/password?
Currently, Ghost.org (the platform this site is built on) uses magic login links tied to email only. This is more secure than using a username/password, especially for your financial information. We understand there are pros and cons of using magic links, but this is currently the way our service provider offers user logins. For what it's worth, we've found that members get used to this login style and even prefer this method over time.
How do I manage the type of email notifications/newsletters I receive?
First, ensure you're opted in to receive our emails. Go to your account (click here)> Emails> Manage> Choose which type of emails/newsletters you would like to receive.
Still not working? Check your spam and junk folders. You can also mark our emails as important or open and reply to an email, which will teach your inbox you like us.
I want to change my account settings — change my email address, manage which emails I'm getting, update my credit card, etc. Where do I go?
Once logged in, you can manage all your account settings here.
General Questions
Why did No Depression retire the print journal?
Rising costs of production and shipping made it unsustainable to continue. While we know the print journal meant a lot to our readers (and to us), this shift to online memberships allows us to focus on delivering great roots journalism to be published on our website as well other mission focused initiatives like our writing Fellowships with the FreshGrass Institute.
What is replacing the print journal?
We've moved to online memberships more aligned with mission driven, nonprofit organizations like ours. Members will enjoy access to all of our digital content, commenting privileges, Discord community access, archived issues, and other member exclusive perks.
Can I still use nodepression.com?
Yes. While our official domain has changed to nodepression.org to reflect our nonprofit status, nodepression.com will still direct to our site. If you're looking for content that is no longer accessible, please note that we did sunset inactive or broken pages. However, we migrated 5,000 pages from our old site.
What is the FreshGrass Foundation?
The FreshGrass Foundation is No Depression's nonprofit publisher. To learn more about FreshGrass, visit freshgrassfoundation.org.
