It may not be making national news, but we're talking about it: Nashville is not weathering Winter Storm Fern well. Tens of thousands of people are still without power or heat; trees are down and roads aren't cleared. This, of course, impacts the musical community, as a 2024 study showed that the Tennessee music industry comprises more than 23,700 jobs (which includes thousands of self-employed musicians). Check out The Nashville Banner, a not-for-profit, locally-owned, community-supported news organization, for a list of ways to help. The Nashville Scene also shared a list of resources:
Nashville musicians like Margo Price and Wild Ponies have shared their stories on social media:
In Minnesota, it is national (and international) news that ICE murdered another citizen in the street on Saturday. The Twin Cities community is showing up loudly — with drum lines, sing-alongs at vigils, and more.
The Minnesota music industry is organizing, too. Musicians like Paul Metsa and Alan Sparhawk released a new video for Metsa's 2025 song, "No Kings, No Crown."
Trampled By Turtles announced a midday, mutual aid benefit concert for tomorrow (January 31) at Turf Club.
Additionally, venues like First Avenue held A Concert of Solidarity & Resistance to Defend Minnesota, which took place this afternoon, featuring roots musicians like Tom Morello and Ike Reilly.
Around the world, even more folks are singing. Bruce Springsteen and Billy Bragg both released new songs in solidarity.
My Morning Jacket released a Bandcamp-exclusive album of all acoustic originals and covers titled Peacelands, with proceeds benefitting nonprofit organizations American Civil Liberties Union, Doctors Without Borders, and the International Rescue Committee.
