News out of Nashville this morning is that singer-songwriter Todd Snider passed away on Friday, November 14. Over the last few weeks, the funny, freak-folk adjacent troubadour has been in the news, not only for his latest album HIGH, LONESOME AND THEN SOME, which came out October 17 via Aimless Records / Thirty Tigers, but also for a suddenly canceled tour and arrest. It recently came to light that he had been suffering from walking pneumonia, as well.
Although details from these recent events are still scarce, Snider was beloved as a musician. He was an artist's artist and a fixture in the East Nashville arts and culture scene. No Depression last caught up with him in 2022, but archives show that he's been a staple in this corner of roots music since his third album, 1998's Viva Satellite.
Snider's team shared the following tribute:
Others — including No Depression contributing photographers Amos Perrine and Chad Corcoran, The Five Spot venue in Nashville, and artists Charlie Overbey and Michael Paul Brennan — have also already been sharing their memories and care:
As the news continued to spread, more and more roots musicians paid their respects, including Aaron Lee Tasjan, Wild Ponies, and the Newport Folk Festival.

Elsewhere in Nashville, singer-songwriter Ron Pope announced a benefit concert to support the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. Called “Hunger Can’t Wait: Songs for SNAP Relief,” the event is scheduled to take place Sunday, November 23, at Eastside Bowl in Nashville. Pope said the following a press release:
It’s no secret that I love volunteering at the food bank. ...No other part of my life is that particular brand of fulfilling. I bring my friends, I bring my family, and we pack boxes or sort what needs sorting. I love having the opportunity to do something tangible to help our neighbors. This time, Second Harvest called me not to haul stuff, but to raise my voice in song. I’ll be hosting an evening of music with incredible songwriters, including my buds Tyler Braden, Morgan Wade, Hayes Carll, Mary Gauthier, Jaimee Harris, Tommy Prine, Kim Richey, and some more special guests that I can’t tell y’all about just yet.
Tickets are available for purchase here and direct donations to the food bank can be made here.

NPR reported on the latest generation of folk-protest singers going viral on social media. No Depression has been covering all three of these featured artists, — Jesse Welles, Jensen McRae, and Mon Rovîa — as well.
