This week was a good one for uncovering cover songs. First up, Hayes Carll and Jobi Riccio tackle Blaze Foley.
Next, Iron & Wine and I'm With Her played some of both of their songs together in a new EP that was just released, titled Songs from the Stage: Glenside. Talk about killer harmonies.
Foundational alt-country band Drive-by Truckers announced The Definitive Decoration Day, due out November 14 via New West Records. Similar to their recent reissues, The Complete Dirty South and Southern Rock Opera Deluxe Edition, the Truckers and team have remixed, remastered, and repressed the record to be released on four LPs. Additionally, the box set will come with a previously unreleased, double-LP live album titled Heathens Live at Flicker Bar, Athens, GA - June 20, 2002.
In the press release, two contemporaries and fans shared their excitement for the reissue: Craig Finn of The Hold Steady says, “Decoration Day was the Drive-By Truckers’ three songwriters firing on all cylinders—alternately thoughtful, pissed off, charming, surly and often hilarious. I marvel at this record. It’s a true American classic.”
Additionally, BJ Barham of American Aquarium says, “This is, without a doubt, one of my desert island records. Without DBT’s Decoration Day, there is no American Aquarium. Long live DBT!”
Kimber Ludiker of Della Mae shared a post on Facebook about an issue many listeners probably wouldn't know about — how band bios are populated on streaming services and how the process doesn't actually give authority to the artists. Learn more below.
Max Abrams, saxophonist for The Mavericks and other bands, announced that proceeds from the first single of his new album will go directly toward offsetting the cost of cancer treatments for his bandmate and friend, Raul Malo. As Abrams writes:
The first single from my record, 'Harvest Moon,' comes out today. All proceeds from streaming on all platforms will go to the Malo family to help pay for Raul’s continued care. The link will take you to the song where you listen. No middleman, no email address. Just supporting him.
"Harvest Moon" was one of my favorite songs to play with The Mavericks. I meant my version as a tribute to Raul, and I hope we can use it as a tool to support him and his family.
This is something that can scale. If you share it with a friend, or add it to a playlist, it tells the algorithm to share it with others. In short, people we don’t know and might never meet will support Raul without even knowing they are doing it.
We all want to give him back some small part of what he’s given us. This is the first idea. There will be more hopefully. But for now let’s try this and see where it goes.
In the wider music world, RIP to two legends — R&B and soul singer D'Angelo and classic rock guitarist Ace Frehley. Amanda Petrusich memorialized the former in the New Yorker and Andy Greene paid tribute to the latter for Rolling Stone.
