Over five albums – including their bluesy debut, Revelator (2011), the socio-politically charged Let Me Get By (2016), and their magnum opus, I Am the Moon (2022) – Tedeschi Trucks Band synthesized their eclectic bents and honed their songcraft. With their sixth album, Future Soul, the band continue to integrate broad affinities, offering a sequence that is ambitious in scope and easy-going in tone.
The album launches with the funky “Crazy Cryin’,” Susan Tedeschi’s voice brimming with Saturday-night swagger and Sunday-morning remorse. “I Got You,” meanwhile, is a ’70s-inspired feel-good exemplar. It might be 30 degrees outside, but damn if it isn’t endless summer when you hear this track. Tedeschi’s voice is supple and buoyant. Backing vocals gust through the mix like a honeysuckle breeze. Everything really is gonna be alright this mornin’. As the song nears completion, Derek Trucks, applauded by the ghost of Duane Allman, forges a tasteful yet fiery solo, carrying the piece to its glorious finish.
