Editor’s Note: Here at No Depression there’s too much great roots music in a year for us to cover it all. So in December, when new releases slow down, we ask writers to review some of the best albums we missed throughout the year in an on-going series called What We Missed.
The husband and wife team of Eric Lindberg and Doni Zasloff blend jazz, blues, bluegrass, blues, and folk for a sound they call ‘progressive Americana.’ Lindberg and Zasloff are the core members of the band, with a rotating cast of musicians filling out the sound when schedules allow, which expands even more for this release with guest stars including Jerry Douglas on Dobro, Sam Bush mandolin, Rob McCoury on banjo and Greg Leisz on pedal steel.
Their latest release, Beacons, is a double album, 18 tracks divided into Americana and Bluegrass. “The songs are supposed to be 18 little candles," Lindberg explained in an interview with The Bluegrass Standard last month. "Little beacons of light that are reminders for my wife and I to stick to our own path and to see the bright side and to be grateful.”
