ALBUM REVIEW, What We Missed: A New Horizon, With The Soundscapes of ‘Earthstar Mountain’

Editor’s Note: Here at No Depression there’s too much great roots music in a year for us to cover it all. So in December, when new releases slow down, we ask writers to review some of the best albums we missed throughout the year in an on-going series called What We Missed.

There were always hints at an effortless cool in the ways Hannah Cohen would sway and sing backup, keeping time on stage with her partner Sam Evian. She’s in the background but you can’t keep your eyes off of her. And it was definitely there on her hypnotic 2019 release Welcome Home, an underrated gem that deserves regular revisiting for the way it cast a hazy, dreamy lens on the most complex conundrums of young womanhood. But with her follow-up, Earthstar Mountain, Cohen has stepped into the spotlight that has been beckoning her, easing into a sound that’s heavier on the grooves, her chiffon vocals like a billow of lavender smoke.
