ALBUM REVIEW: Thomm Jutz Practices the Alchemy of Songwriting on ‘Ring-A-Bellin’’

With his new album Ring-A-Bellin’, songwriter Thomm Jutz delivers a personal project that appeals to listeners on many levels. A classically trained musician as well, Jutz has been sought-after for musical collaborations by fellow performers and songwriters. On Ring-A-Bellin’ Jutz created a collection of songs — 18 of them — that reflect his deep interest in the work of Carl Jung and the concept of alchemy, which he suggests mirrors the work of a songwriter.

One need not be familiar with Jungian psychology, however, to appreciate the alchemy with which Jutz has created this album. Beginning intentionally with a small musical setting—just himself with Mark Fain on bass—Jutz kept each song as spare as possible, sometimes bringing in his co-writers to play or sing along.
