ALBUM REVIEW: Julianna Riolino Gives Her All on Deluxe ‘Echo in the Dust’

There isn’t a single note on Julianna Riolino’s sophomore album Echo in the Dust that isn’t delivered with what sounds like every bit of gusto she’s got. Whether she’s offering a romantic gesture or a simmering kiss-off, Riolino uses all of her voice—the soulful bits and the twangy ones, the soft and warm, the snarling and the smoky. Because of this, Echo in the Dust, and Riolino, defy categorization, stretching in all directions from head-banging psych rock to pastoral canyon howls, sultry girl group belting, power pop, and garage country. She doesn’t waste any breath on uncertainty, seemingly perfectly at home in each of these outfits, and the versatility means Echo in the Dust will keep you on your toes until its final mic drop.
