ALBUM REVIEW: Ashley Monroe’s ‘Tennessee Lightning’ is a Swampy, Luminous Reflection on Loss and Hope

Ashley Monroe returns after a four year absence with an electrifying new album that traverses a variety of musical landscapes, from swampy blues to gospel to pop and country. Tennessee Lightning aptly describes the striking blend of Monroe’s mesmerizing vocals and the transcendent musical styles that mark the songs on the album. Monroe explores themes of loss, love, and hope on the album.

The album’s opening track, “I’m Gonna Run,” floats in on a shimmering wave of psychedelic strings that create a haunting atmosphere that Monroe fills with her crystalline vocals. Major chords ride over a minor chord foundation as she anticipates the return of a lover to whom she’s “gonna run.” Monroe’s sultry vocals soar on “Risen Road,” a swampy ballad of salvation and sin.
